Is an online demand letter valid?
Yes. The Civil Code of Québec (art. 1595) requires the demand letter to be made in writing : it requires neither paper, nor a lawyer, nor any particular sending method. What matters is the letter's content and your ability to prove it was received.
For transmission, Quebec's Act to establish a legal framework for information technology (LCCJTI) governs electronic sending: section 31 provides that a technology-based document is presumed received when it becomes accessible at the recipient's address. Our certified email produces a timestamped proof report conforming to that framework. One important nuance: the recipient must have consented to receiving communications by email: if you've never exchanged emails with them, double up with registered mail.

How long does an online demand letter take?

Do I need a lawyer?
No. The law does not require a demand letter to be written by a lawyer. What matters: stating the facts, making your demand, allowing a reasonable deadline (usually 10 days) and being able to prove receipt. Our templates structure all of that with the relevant articles of the Civil Code of Québec.
Is the proof of receipt accepted by the courts?
The proof report conforms to the LCCJTI, which recognizes the legal value of technology-based documents. Admissibility is weighed case by case by the judge, who considers the document's integrity (our SHA-256 fingerprint), the reliability of the transmission (timestamped SMTP response) and the recipient's consent to email.
What if I get no response?
If the deadline you allowed expires without a response, you can file an application with the Tribunal administratif du logement (for a housing dispute) or small claims court, with your demand letter and the proof report as exhibits. Many disputes settle at the demand-letter stage, though.
Can I send it in French?
